Sample Calls to the CDR

Families and service providers seek a variety of resources when they call or use the CDR. These examples illustrate some of the types of requests we receive and how the Resource Specialists respond.

What if I think my 10 month old child is developing more slowly than she should be?

The Resource Specialist would refer the family to the Early Intervention and Child Service Coordination programs in their county, as well as a contact for the developmental evaluation center in their region. The Specialist would send the family printed information on developmental milestones in young children and information explaining what a developmental evaluation involves.

My child was just diagnosed with autism. What is it and what do I need to do now?

The Resource Specialist would send printed information on autism to the family as well as a list of resouces and contacts for further information, support and services. The Specialist would connect the family with the local Family Support program in their area, if one existed, or another local organization.

Can you tell me where there is a camp for children with cancer?

The Resource Specialist would send the caller the most recent Summer Camp Directory for Families of Children with Special Needs compiled each year by Family Support Network of North Carolina or advise them to view it online on our website (available in early spring each year).

Where can I find a motorized wheelchair for a family I am working with and get some assistance paying for it?

The Resource Specialist would send the caller information on Assistive Technology and refer them to organizations that provide Assistive Technology services, such as information, evaluations, and equipment loan and tryouts. The Specialist would also send the caller information on the laws regarding Assistive Technology provision under IDEA and refer the caller to North Carolina's Assistive Technology Project for further information on funding options.

One of my children has a developmental disorder. How can I get some respite care so I can spend some quality time with my other children, too?

The Resource Specialist would put this family in touch with agencies that provide respite care in their area and other support agencies that might provide emotional support (like Family Support programs) for the family.
